BEST FICTION SHORT FILM

Pufferfish

Jury motivation:
The story of Ava, who participates in a school religious ritual and then in her cousin’s birthday party, is told with sensitivity, highlighting the interpersonal and cultural dynamics that influence her life and the inevitable choices. The film gives us an authentic and engaging representation of the weight of dogmas and the inevitable tensions they generate in the child protagonist and in her family, which for once is not necessarily bigoted. Everyday moments mix with imaginative and extraordinary events, giving the short film a particular character.

BEST ANIMATION SHORT FILM

Rest in piece

Jury motivation:
For a rare portrait of fantastic cannibalism and an unprecedented metamorphic superpower, it is once again possible to immerse yourself in the physical and spiritual journey of a refugee. In pursuit of survival, a sentiment known to the director himself, “Rest in piece” highlights with extreme simplicity an irreparable tragedy for those who, without having chosen it, are forced to abandon their country.
A short film that opens up to multiple reflections: the importance of one’s roots, the nourishment of memories, the longed-for hope.

BEST FICTION SHORT ‘FOR’

Fortissimo

Jury motivation:
A duel between egos breaks out upon the arrival of a little girl in the convent, a virtuoso prodigy at the piano. A lively and entertaining story, developed through characteristic protagonists and purely entertaining sketches.
Homage to the western, bright colors, fast-paced rhythms: little is needed to construct a ‘very strong’ fiction short!

BEST ANIMATION SHORT ‘FOR’

Jury motivation:
Have you ever seen a crow hopping on the gravestones in a cemetery? The old young bird in the film makes us fly for 10 minutes in a magical world where past and present, music and drawings expertly blend. Thanks above all to a combination of animation and filming techniques, which add a level of depth and visual complexity to the story, it takes us on a fascinating journey through the protagonist’s past and present.

BEST SHORT THEME ‘EXPLORATION’

Ovo

Jury motivation:
The theme of this year’s edition of short films is exploration. Exploration as a curious look at near and far environments, in time and space. A look in which the viewer finds himself immersed following the protagonists of “Ovo”: a robot from space and a bird that has just hatched from the egg. Two journeys that soon become one. A journey that leads us to think about the preservation of the environment and the protection of the uniqueness of the beings that populate it, making us all reflect on the relationship between technology and nature and the preciousness of wondering. For the language used: not surprisingly, suitable for everyone!

SPECIAL MENTION

Rainboy

Jury motivation:
An ordinary gardener, plants drops to grow clouds. In his actions, however, he finds himself clashing with the vanity of Sole! A simple yet effective animation to talk about relationships with others and emotions.
Educational freshness that is also characterized by a strong and engaging soundtrack. Suitable for children, and to be children again.

BEST SHORT THEME “PONTE”

Live

Jury motivation:
Drama inspired by real events, “Live” is the story of two women, two journalists, two activists: Katerina Bakhvalova and Daria Chultsova. It is the story of a peaceful demonstration repressed by the police. It is both the history and the “stories” of a suppressed freedom of expression.
Getting to know the Belarusian world is a bridge so as not to forget how dear freedom is to us and, in the more specific case of “Live”, a bridge to freedom of expression.

Xunpu

Jury motivation:
Against the backdrop of the monochrome skyscrapers of Quanzhou, a small boat sails away from the bay carrying elderly women draped in colourful foulards. They are headed towards the shallows nearby Xunpu, where they are going to collect mollusks. They tell us about the hard life of yore as they keep a local tradition alive by weaving their granddaughters’ hair into their extremely elaborate, thousand-year-old style lit up by pins and brightly coloured flowers. As past and present intertwine in an ancient rite that is also a touristic attraction, an ancestral custom blooms once more in the alleys and streets of the city. The short is a precious little record that morphs quite rightfully into a statement of feminine identity; a statement that crosses generations with a poetic rather than nostalgic tone.
