For being able to combine poetry with levity, in a story full of humanity.

PORAPPÈ

di Jesús Martínez “Nota”
2021 – Spagna – 9:45 min.

Per il coraggio di raccontare una storia che si mescola tra il noir e l’ironia. Con semplicità ci pone domande sul consumo dei social, con l’eccezionale interpretazione di una giovane attrice.

PSN JURY

BEST “BRIDGE” THEMED SHORT FILM

THE KITE

di Martin Smatana
2019 – Repubblica Ceca, Polonia – 13:03 min.

Jury comments:
For the technique used to create the animated short. For the innovative use of materials. Human beings have a limited time to live on earth, but ultimately each of us leaves “a layer” or an indelible memory of our passage.
For the dreamy story that is narrated: death is portrayed in an almost gentle way and a simple kite can reconnect us to our loved ones, becoming a bridge between two worlds. Often, we make the mistake of avoiding addressing the topic of mourning, believing that in this way we can protect children from pain.
As Mantegazza affirms “By not dealing with death in its materiality, the sense of limit is lost, and you are not faced with the ideas of creaturehood and finitude that alone make the experience of humanity’s permanence on earth narratable”. This short film provides an answer to the reality of separation, making it look “not definitive”.

UNESCO JURY

“PADOVA CLUB FOR UNESCO JURY” AWARD

HEADING SOUTH

di Yuan Yuan
2020 – USA – 13:00 min.

Jury comments:
This short film masterfully recounts a moving story and makes us reflect on nature and culture through the eyes of an eight-year-old girl. Behind the family drama, there is the contraposition between the Western lifestyle that puts the old traditions at risk and the lifestyle of the Mongols, who maintain a semi-nomadic life, free to ride horses in the prairies and nurture deep and sincere emotional relationships.

“SLOW JURY”

“SLOW JURY” AWARD

MONDO DOMINO

di Suki
2021 – Francia – 6:15 min.

Jury comments:
In the globalized world that we often desire, we cannot help but imagine that our own actions have global effects. Being ecologist does not mean looking at nature in a paternalistic and often dominating way, but it means above all seeking a balance that guarantees our very survival. Mondo Domino, with a very ironic language at times, has the ability to express one of the great urgencies of our time.

SENIOR JURY BY 18.25

SENIOR JURY AWARD – FICTION

OTAVA

di Lana Bregar
2021 – Slovenia – 14:36 min.

Jury comments:
Elegant yet not simpering shots with a depth common to paintings. A poem chanted by a silence which feels alive thanks to the sounds of nature, telling us of a premature and unfathomable loss for the protagonist. Simple gestures paint a life which carries on despite all, with its ancient rhythms and actions. Actions and looks which slowly rebuild a familial relationship. “It still smells like mom”: a single sentence which breaks the mute sorrow and opens a door to acceptance, to the donning of a new “dress”. The tall grass, which earlier had been a shelter imbued with feelings of the past, is peacefully mowed by a tractor: a new landscape takes form where the old one once was, a metaphor of the seasons of life.

SENIOR JURY AWARD – ANIMATION

LA MEUTE

di Louise Cottin-Euziol, Lou-Anne Abdou, Antoine Blossier Gacic, Charline Hedreville, Agathe Moulin, Victoria Normand, Gabriel Saint-Frison
2021 – Francia – 6:09 min.

Jury comments:
A 3D animation with a “dirty” style which suits its subject and aids the short film in conveying its message. A tense plot and a script solidly anchored in common events, which are grounded even further in reality by their unsettling and unresolved nature. A urban “Little Red Riding Hood” which strongly denounces, in no roundabout ways, the harassment, the intimidation and the abuse perpetrated by the “wolf” in his predatory ways. Loneliness and angst, however, cannot find their catharsis in a world where victims are still treated as jointly liable, as triggers for the most basic instincts of the “pack”.

JUNIOR JURY AWARD – FICTION

OTAVA

di Lana Bregar
2021 – Slovenia – 14:36 min.

Jury comments:
The winner for the fiction BY 18-25 category is the short film ‘Otava’. The attention to detail is extremely enjoyable and delicate and it reflects the attention given to the small things and the family relationships in rural life. Everything fits in a poetic and suspended narrative, technically very well represented by a very meticulous cinematography.

JUNIOR JURY AWARD – ANIMATION

LA MEUTE

di Louise Cottin-Euziol, Lou-Anne Abdou, Antoine Blossier Gacic, Charline Hedreville, Agathe Moulin, Victoria Normand, Gabriel Saint-Frison
2021 – Francia – 6:09 min.

Jury comments:
The winner for the animation BY 18-25 category is the short film ‘La Meute’. The impeccable animation technique together with the soundtrack creates a realistic and poignant environment of overwhelming tension. The contrast between human and animal figure follows the viewer in a crescendo of hopelessness. We also appreciated the profundity and the non-trivial way used to handle a very current topic.

UNICEF JURY CERTIFICATE OF MERIT FOR CHILDREN’S RIGHTS EDUCATION – BY 3.7 COMPETITION

OWLS

di Anastasia Gidion
2021 – Russia – 1:50 min.

Jury comments:
This short film, full of colors, creativity and imagination, thanks to the use of multiple languages and expressive / artistic techniques, was able to combine the Game with the Art as a cultural expression and participation, respecting:
• Art. 31 of the Convention on the Rights of the Child:
1. … the right of the child to rest and leisure, to engage in play and recreational activities appropriate to the age of the child and to participate freely in cultural life and the arts.
2. … the right of the child to participate fully in cultural and artistic life, encouraging the provision of appropriate and equal opportunities for cultural, artistic, recreational and leisure activity.
And Articles 1-2-12 of the Charter of Children’s Rights to Art and Culture presented in Bologna in 2011:
Art. 1 of the Charter of Children’s Rights to Art and Culture: “Children have the right to access art in all its forms: theatre, music, dance, literature, poetry, cinema, visual and multimedia arts”. The word “creatività” (“creativity”) contains the terms “vita” (“life”) and “arte” (“art”) and it rhymes with “vitalità” (“vitality”) and “attività” (“activity”), because creativity is life and art and it gives vitality to every activity. (Taken from: The Charter of Children’s Rights to Art and Culture beyond the law, by Margherita Marzario).
Art. 2 of the Charter says: Children have the right […] to experience artistic languages as “fundamental knowledge”.
Art. 12 Creativity animation, (art. 12 of the Charter: Children have the right […] to experience art and culture guided by their teachers), together with the little directors, they were able to combine art, culture and rights.

CUCÙ AND STELLINA

di Mariangela Barbanente and Antonio Palumbo
2021 – Italy – 6:38 min.

Jury comments:
Interesting for the originality of the story with dialogues between children in parallel with dialogues between things (bicycle and eyeglasses).
The video is technically constructed with good use of image shooting even in the animated movement of objects.
This short film follows Article 29 of the Convention on the Rights of the Child, that says that education, among other things, shall contribute to the development of respect for the natural environment.
There is also a reference to the Unicef Project “Let’s Give Citizenship to Rights” which aims to outline the interconnections between the aims of education, sanctioned by art. 29 of the Convention on the Rights of the Child, and the new Guidelines for the teaching of Civic Education issued by the Ministry of Education.

UNICEF JURY CERTIFICATE OF MERIT FOR CHILDREN’S RIGHTS EDUCATION – BY 11.13 COMPETITION

SEROK

di Zhivar Farajzadeh
2018 – Iran – 5:00 min.

Jury comments:
This short film highlights the difficult situation that the protagonist must face in order to live and seek the rights that are denied to him. In fact, art. 6 of the Convention on the Rights of the Child invokes the inherent right of every child to live, as well as the role of the State in ensuring the possibility of growing up in the best possible way.
The environment is illustrated and presented with meaningful images that contrast with the difficult situation of Serok, who lives in an unsafe situation health-wise, recalling Articles 24 and 27 of the CRC. The narrative of this short film leads everyone to reflect on the rights often denied to many children and adolescents in various parts of the world.
It also refers to Goal no. 3 of the UN 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development which supports the importance of ensuring a healthy life and the well-being of everyone at all ages.

3 EPISTOLARY FILMS

di Collective film directed by 10th-grade students
2020 – Francia – 8:00 min.

Jury comments:
This short film from France features 3 letters written by Aurélien, Adama and Lisa respectively. Through the use of black and white, various situations experienced by today’s youth are illustrated.
The first letter (Aurélien) highlights the difficulty of young people in romantic relationships and towards their parents who often do not recognize the right of young people to diversity (Art. 2 of the CRC) and to share what they think and feel. (Art. 13 of the CRC)
The second letter (Adama) addresses the issue of cultural integration and the difficulty of living away from family (Art. 10 of the CRC) as well as the right to speak their own language, to profess their own religion and to maintain their own identity (Art. 30 of the CRC).
The third letter (Lisa) represents the difficulty of young people in their relationships with others, in being accepted and being able to freely share what they feel and think (Art. 13 of the CRC).
This short film uses black and white with artistic sensitivity and also, the use of the letter assumes an important value as a means of communication to express the protagonists’ thoughts.
